Aluminum sulfide is an inorganic compound that is used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds. It can be synthesized by reacting aluminum with sulfur, sodium carbonate, and argon. The reaction mechanism is not well understood but it is believed to involve the formation of an aluminum sulfide film on the surface of the substrate. The low energy process results in complete conversion of the reactants to product. This reaction method has been shown to produce a variety of products depending on the temperature and duration of the reaction. Thermodynamic data has been collected for various reactions and light emission has been observed during laser ablation experiments.
