6-Methoxydihydroavicine is a benzophenanthridine alkaloid that has been shown to have cytotoxic, apoptotic and antiplatelet activities. 6-Methoxydihydroavicine inhibits the mitochondrial respiratory chain at cytochrome c oxidase, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species and subsequent cellular damage. It also causes proteolysis in cancer cells and triggers apoptotic cell death by binding to bcl-2 family proteins. 6-Methoxydihydroavicine is being studied as an anticancer agent in ht29 cells and other human cancer cell lines.
