Description

5-Amino-1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylic acid (5ABTC) is a heterocyclic amine that has potent anti-inflammatory activity. 5ABTC prevents the production of inflammatory prostaglandin E2 by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase activities. It also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin 1β (IL1β), and IL6. 5ABTC is not cytotoxic to cells in vitro and has been shown to be safe in vivo. The compound's anti-inflammatory effects are due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of arachidonic acid, which is an important precursor for proinflammatory signaling pathways.
