Description

Barium sulfate is a chemical compound that is typically used in the treatment of wastewater and in the production of paper. It has been shown to be genotoxic, meaning that it damages DNA or genetic material, and this effect increases with exposure to radiation. Barium sulfate is also known for its use in bowel disease as a weighting agent for bowel preparation before colonoscopy or other gastrointestinal procedures. The particle size and density of barium sulfate influences the extent of bowel distention and bowel cleansing. One study found that barium sulfate caused an increase in body mass index (BMI) when used as a weighting agent for patients with fluid retention.
