(-)-Diisopropyl-L-Malate is a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and matrix metalloprotease (MMP) inhibitors. It is used as a pharmaceutical agent to inhibit collagenolysis, which is the breakdown of collagen by MMPs. (-)-Diisopropyl-L-Malate inhibits the activity of MMPs such as collagenase, gelatinase, stromelysin, and matrilysin. This inhibition prevents the cleavage of type I and III collagens in the extracellular matrix and consequently prevents degradation of the extracellular matrix. (-)-Diisopropyl-L-Malate also has strong metal ion chelating properties that may be useful in antitumour therapy.
