3,4-Dicaffeoylquinic acid is a reactive phenolic compound that has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy in vitro. The compound also inhibits the activity of a number of enzymes, including both matrix metalloproteinase and carbohydrate esterase. 3,4-Dicaffeoylquinic acid has been shown to scavenge anion radicals in vitro. This compound is found in a number of natural sources such as green tea leaves and coffee beans. It is also present in the leaves of some plants such as Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) and Ziziphus jujuba (Chinese jujube).
