Sodium hypophosphite is a white crystalline solid or granular material that is soluble in water and has the chemical formula NaPO2. It is used as an analytical reagent, pH buffer, and reducing agent. Sodium hypophosphite reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form phosphorous acid, which can be used to produce phosphoric acid. In this reaction, sodium hypophosphite acts as a reducing agent because it transfers its electrons to hydrogen fluoride. Sodium hypophosphite can also be used to reduce phosphorus pentoxide to form phosphorus oxide. This reaction is important for the production of phosphates for use in fertilizer and detergents.
