Description:

AZD 8797 is a molecule that inhibits the release of neurotrophic factors and induces neuronal death by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential. AZD 8797 has also been shown to decrease neuronal function in the brain and to increase microglia activity. It has been shown that AZD 8797 decreases the production of chemokines, which are molecules that attract immune cells such as T-cells and macrophages to the site of infection. This drug has been shown to inhibit HIV infection by decreasing HIV gene expression and increasing the number of CD4+ T cells in mice. AZD 8797 is currently being studied for its effects on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, spinal cord injury, and peripheral nerve injury.
